News Report *READ*

Post by Peter Brev »

Hello.

Before we start discussing about anything, I want to make it clear that I will not tolerate any trolling, flaming, sarcasm, racism, religious discussions and political debate on Steam/Valve conduct towards you, your friends, any users using the Internet or me. This thread should stay clean and tidy. Replies should be constructive, organized and straight to the point. I believe that not everyone will agree with everyone or even with me, but if it's the case, stay calm and discuss. If this thread turns out to be messy, I'll lock the thread. Thanks.

I wanted to post this in order to explain you why you will no longer see me on Steam or in games.

Steam is a platform that I discovered when I first bought Half-Life 2: Episode 1 retail box in a shop.

When I installed Steam on my older computer, I found Steam to be that, a simple game manager.

But then, I discovered it was alot more than that and then more updates came, featuring the new friends and the Steam Community.

Then came the 2010 new UI, which looks amazing.

During the years, Steam kept updating and updating: leading to a more and more poorly made program, unfortunately, it's what I think and you'll understand why.

Most of the time, Steam will keep updating itself or games will. That means that you update more your games than you play them, making Steam really annoying.

Steam will use almost all of your Internet in the background for things you don't even know. Yes, it's Steam, because as soon as you end their 2 processes (Steam.exe and Steam_Service.exe), your Internet will come back to normal.

I've mainly used Steam to play my games, but now, Valve decided to introduce Steam Pipe, which, as its name says, delivers a much smoother link between games (using the common folder in this case).

Of course it gave a few advantages into faster gaming but also broke features, such as the Source SDK that many people have been using for years.

The brand new Source SDK 2013 gave an important engine update to new games such as CS:GO, but unfortunately, the anti-cheat system is unstable on this game (I've been seeing this with many of my friends).

Nowadays, Steam will force you to update games no matter what. You can't do anything else while your games are updating.

The auto-update feature was a good idea, but you can't pause it, even if you try, you won't be able to play your game anyway.

When you are downloading a game or games, the downloads will just pause themselves. Even though the new feature has been added, I find it non-functional time to time, or just always.

I'm used to playing games since I'm 4 years old and Valve is a very good company in terms of making games. But their platform is becoming more and more pathetic to my eyes and that's why I stopped playing & using Steam.

Every now and then, Steam will prompt you to restart the client in order to apply new updates. Often these updates are not as critical as they used to be. The new Big Picture mode, Mac and Linux support for Steam just make the Steam updates annoying as they often don't bring anything new or fix bugs on Steam in general.

The massive use of your Internet often makes pages not load or load with unformatted text (in the client).

No, my internet connection is very good as I can watch 4K quality videos on YouTube easily when Steam is off.

Steam is using more and more CPU and memory usuage as Steam goes on updating/adding their features. This is a disavantage for low PC performance (don't brag about buying a new computer. Not everyone can afford a powerful computer).

And then, after talking to MyBack about a new "work" I've been making him test, I saw my computer crashed because Steam is using an excessive amount of CPU/Memory.

No, no and no! Zero programs (listed in my process tab in Task Manager) were taking that much CPU/Memory with Steam on and no downloads were going on in Firefox.

When I was prompted to restart my computer, Windows would just stop booting and that's because of Steam (don't say otherwise, I've got a full error report, no viruses, pc was scanned 24 hours before the pc crashed).

Because of the lack of stability of Steam, I will no longer be installing it again and I will no longer come back.

I sincerely apologize if I relinquished my games and my friends (on Steam), but I also have to study harder, learn better and of course, make sure I have a real paid job later.

This wretched gaming platform are making more and more people leave Steam.

I apologize if you find this wistful, but that's how I perceive it.

In conjunction with the wishy-washy russians that have been constantly adding me, I also find Steam to lack of security (I'm not sure if security is appropriate word in this exhilarating discussion) but who cares about the customers on Steam?

This constant ignorance of Valve about their customer is inordinate.

Steam Support does listen to you when it comes to retrieving a lost account, but other than that, they ignore your question abysmally.

I'm trying to be placid, but I've lost loads of files on my computer because of this sordid gaming platform.

I'm not trying to be noxious but but there should be a minimum of carefulness about their customers.

In conclusion:

Valve is becoming more and more feckless regarding gaming platform management, ergo making people leave.

Paradoxically, Valve is yet known to be making good games, and that's why I like their company.

I'm saving money to buy a new PS2 console and with Half-Life on it because it is the best console game I've ever played.

If you want to talk with me, you can't.

I want to thank the players I met during all these years, including: Ant, Nick, Ana, Aya, Demon, MyBack... and all the amazing friends who supported me in-game.

I have also changed my avatar and my signature.

It's been a good ride.

In memory of all your energy that makes me thrive.

Good luck with your future.

Peter Brev.

Demon,

I will not mention your coxcombry that seems obvious in your reply but I understand your happiness of a querulous user leaving a community with dedication and pride.

However, you could have made yourself less obvious in your statement.

Thank you anyway.

Great decision mate. We've had our difficulties, but it's not a reason not to show respect.
Good luck in life

Hey Peter I just want to wish you good luck with the future. I am sorry to hear that you also leave... but I kinda think the most of us is about to leave

As I see it we started together as a group. Unfortunate the group are more or less dead...
We all seen this coming, I hoped this was going to go more slowly than this but we can't all get what we want.

I hope you will hang on to this web. So we at least can talk together sometime :)

Peter you have always been in my top5 friends since we started to talk together. You were there for me all the time... I don't know how to say goodbye to such a good friend. I wish this just was a dream all of this. But we can't stand on to the past we have to go on. The humanity is made to go on. Can't stand the same place to long time.

(ps. some of us is beginning to play on ps network again :)

Thank you, You Noob, for your kind words.

I'm sorry to learn that a good friend of yours (me) is leaving.

At least, you are not as stygian as Demon is and I feel that you are open-hearted in your words.

Yes, I'll try to be viewing the forums every now and then.

Well, the way you described Steam using a ton of resources is not the same as me. Steam practically uses nothing on my laptop (memory and CPU), and there are options to disable auto-update or to allow downloads to continue while playing. I would give all positive reviews in terms of Steam's functionality and security. Anyway, it's too late for all that i guess since you seem to have made up your mind.

Good luck with whatever you plan on doing in the future, and thanks for all the help and support you provided to the community, including your time being a server admin and creating maps.

Cya, and hopefully you'll check back on the forums every now and then.

Same for me. We don't have the most fantastic of internet but Everything seems to still run fine, and it doesn't take hardly and cpu or ram. I'm unsure what would have caused it to be so troublesome, perhaps different countries, perhaps different amounts of steam content present, who knows, but I'll assume you don't want to tackle that problem, at least for a while.

Tis a shame you have to leave entirely rather than keeping a community link but I suppose that might have been too complicated, or arduous, or just not part of your plan. In any case, I can guarantee you'll be remembered throughout the people you've met here, and I wish ya luck with whatever your future holds. Hopefully it will all end well and some fun can be had on the way.

Including your fast Internet and brand new laptop, you probably don't seem to feel Steam corrupting your CPU/Memory.

Perhaps it's just my review about Steam and you've got your own.

I don't like how Steam is and with all these new features (such as Big Picture. Making a key combination by accident launches BP, and to exit it, sometimes crashes Steam).

I'm sorry to make you learn I'm leaving Steam.

Friends are friends, even over the network. They are humans and real friends do not get forgotten.

My school work and my future must be prioritized.

I thank you too for using my maps, and creating the awesome deathrun servers.

I apologize if you do take it as a shame.

I find optuse the fact you just said that (the underlined part).

However, I still thank you if you remember me.

It's not a lie what Peter says. Steam do take a lot of CPU and Internet. If you ever watch then when system uses a lot of CPU and you propaly wonder why that's also a part of steam. Svhost always goes high (svhost is the program letting you hava mulitiply app's open)
