Laser mice don't have balls in them :p
Did you try the same type of mouse?
My last computer was completely broken at the end and my laser mouse stopped working every few seconds but I could use the old ball mouse..

I tested another kind of mouse I had, laser one too, but with an USB key.
The one I use since a few months is a laser one too, but we need to link it to the computer with a cable.
Both are working perfectly on desktop, internet, but every movement is delayed by ~5 sec in minecraft and HL2.

I'm going to search for some old ball mouse but I'm not sure if there are still some nowadays...lawl.
