I think that if we ever meet an extraterrestrials race they will be peaceful.
I even think that they spotted us since a long time but as they saw how ridiculous and stupid we are with wars, money and sex scandals they just decided to come back in a few decades, lol .
With them, idk ,we could share knowings and merge, maybe ?
From my point of view, mankind's goals are evolving with her : We've reached the "surviving" goal : Now we are better like "Temperate" and "Discover", I think.

Lol, extraterrestrials aren't all peaceful if there are.
Take example on ants; they are "discussing" with chemical stuffs, when tells you that aliens will have eyes, mouth, ears, or sensorial aptitudes? Maybe they are like bats, and see with sonar stuffs...
Merge that; Alien civilization talking with chemical reactions, seeing with sonar, they would have no phone, and maybe no cloths, or even, no sexual organs to reproduce.
So now, tell me how they would say; "hey, lets share techologies with them, and we will get from them",
#1) they are probably calmer than us, or even more overreacting to everything (ex, touching his arm/tentacle/whatever = mass attack from the alien group).
#2) Think how they would react torward us; Do they see potential to learn or go on the wrong way?
#3) Are they searching for a new kind of delicious nutriment?
#4) Are they in need of subjects for experimentations, but they aren't enough for this on their planet?
#5) Maybe they are not caring at all about us, like we do with ants outsides?
Think that we are not all willing to meet aliens, honestly i wouldn't like that everyone take the decision to do so without our confirmation of all of us... Yea majority, lead us torward destruction. Another point would be; Would you like to meet an alien race that will be better than us, and directing us on everything we do? Reform of the education, assimilation to a new culture, religion, etc.
Take for example the amerindians, they were mostly converted from their religion to another.
Would you trust an alien that you don't know if it lies or not? Tell me how you know a dog is lying... uh?
Keep in mind that what i say is not static, it is dynamic.
