How to survive a nuclear attack

Post by [GR]doodleninja »

so today i had a dream about an incoming nuclear blast / act of terrorism with nuclear weapons.

i could feel the heat of those several blast and the air burst they made.
In the dream i seeked shelter alone in basements and caves and after the first two strikes (which were a LOT smaller than a rl atomic bomb would be),
I convinced my family to flee to the town where my mom came from (don't know what name. started with s and does not matchthe reality )
It was located in a small town in the middle of nowhere, just farms and it would likely be not a target of the enemy.
(on the way there were another several strikes and stuff and the dream was overall very action packed, but that does not matter here.)

So, this made me think.

The current situation with north korea and the dipshit that is leading it, could eventually (possible, but notlikely) form into a conflict with nuclear weapons,
most likely directed at the US.

So what do, when a nuclear stike is imminent.

I read the whole morning on how to survive a nuclear attack and i collected some information.

The following tutorial is partly written from my own knowledge and expperience and partly copypasta'd from several different guides.

If your city is the target of a nuclear attack, you'll need to do more than duck and cover. Between the sheer destructive force of the blast and the horrors of fallout, the odds of survival can be depressingly slim.
Here's a list of tips to beat the odds of this oft-feared doomsday scenario.

In a traditional nuclear exchange warning times might be as little as three to four minutes (for the UK and Europe) or from 15-30 minutes for the U.S. and Canada.
Air raid sirens (if they still exist in your community) and public emergency systems would be put to use to notify you of an impending attack. Do not ignore these! Even if you feel your community may not be at risk in a nuclear exchange you should still find shelter as only the enemy knows all of the targets that will be hit.
In a large scale nuclear exchange the tactic of using an electro-magnetic pulse from a high-yield nuclear weapon detonated high above a target country or area would most likely be used. This would cause all sorts of electronic devices to fail from cell phones to automobiles.
If you notice that all vehicles and electronics in your immediate area have failed all at once then it is almost a sure sign that a nuclear attack is imminent.
On the other hand, nuclear attack from a terrorist might come with little to no warning, in which case you must know what to do immediately.
In either case the following steps do apply.

Keep an eye on the news.A nuclear attack will unlikely come out of the blue from an enemy nation. Such an attack would likely be preceded by a deteriorating political situation.
A war with conventional weapons between nations that both have nuclear weapons, if not ended swiftly, may escalate towards nuclear war; and even limited nuclear strikes in one region carry the likelihood to escalate towards an all-out nuclear war elsewhere.

Many countries have a rating system to denote the imminence of attack. In the USA and Canada, for example, it may be useful to know know the DEFCON (DEFense CONdition) level.

Step 1: Don't Look at the Flash

It's tempting -- I know. However, watching the flash from a nuclear explosion is nothing like rubbernecking a traffic accident. The resulting burst of light is several times brighter than the sun.
Witnessing this level of brilliance can produce temporary blindness for the lucky, and permanent loss of sight for the truly curious. The best course of action? Look away from the flash and put a barrier over your eyes.
Keeping your eyesight is paramount -- you'll need it for all of the remaining steps.

Step 2: Find Cover From the Blast

The blast cloud from a 50-megaton bomb, shown at right, reaches into the stratosphere
The seconds following the initial flash are critical. Luckily, factors like explosive yield, weather, and distance can lessen the effects of the shock wave -- but don't kid yourself, it's coming.
The best method for weathering this stage is finding an ideal barrier between yourself and the combination of extreme pressure, heat, thermal radiation and 500mph winds headed your way.
This is where survival gets a little tricky.
Given the number of variables present in a city setting, there's no surefire way to avoid this wall of death (save for getting underground). However, hunkering down in a blast resistant or brick building and staying away from windows can help your odds.
Likewise, in a high rise or apartment setting, you'll want to make your way above the first few floors and get low somewhere in the middle of the building.
If you are unable to find any of these shelters fast enough then stay as low to the ground as possible. Hunkering or laying behind the curb of a sidewalk or other small impediment facing the blast is better than taking the brunt of it standing as the pressure wave can cause massive internal damage.
Most deaths from a nuclear explosion are attributed to flying debris, mainly glass. Just like in an earthquake try to keep your vital organs and head covered with your arms.

NOTE:* A 1950s refrigerator will not keep you safe from the blast.

Step 3: Assess the Landscape

Look for escape routes or potential ad-hoc fallout shelters. With the majority of the blast damage done, another pressing issue lies ahead -- radiation exposure. Fallout is typically at its worst shortly after the blast, so time is of the essence. Depending on the magnitude of the explosion, it can last as long as three weeks, but variables like wind speed, terrain and weather can change this.

Topside Survivors

Survivors caught topside during the blast are in an especially precarious situation. Everything from clothing to hair is likely contaminated and prolonged exposure to this environment can result in acute radiation sickness and eventually death. The primary goal should be assessing the landscape and either heading underground, or fleeing the area.
In general, any area that's downwind of the blast or rife with heavy crosswinds should be avoided during evacuation. Open areas at a lower elevation than the blast site should also be avoided, as they become hotbeds for settling radioactive material.

Underground Survivors

If fleeing the initial blast took you underground to a basement or subway tunnel, then you're most likely ahead of the game. Since the Earth insulates the majority of topside radiation, the next priority should be finding food, water and sealing any access points that might let in falling radioactive debris. Also, it's advisable to mark the outside of the entryway to let disaster workers know that you're inside.

Step 4: Decontaminate

Finding a fallout-safe location is only half the battle. The other half is keeping your refuge radiation-free. Anything that was outdoors during the blast (including people) has likely been contaminated. As such, survivors should undergo a quick and dirty decontamination process before entering shelter. A thorough rubdown with soap and water should do the trick for skin and hair, and a vigorous brushing of clothing should help.
It sounds trite, but it helps. Just make sure not to go nuts with the scrubbing -- an open wound is begging for internal contamination.

Step 5: Wait for Rescue

Given the extreme rarity of nuclear explosions in urban areas, it's likely that somebody is on the way to help (barring any doomsday scenarios). However, the obvious dangers of fallout should prevent you from aimlessly wandering the landscape and yelling for help.
If you're lucky enough to have escaped with a radio or cell phone, give it a shot.
It will most likely work. Unlike Hollywood nuclear explosions, electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) only happens when high-yield nuclear weapons are detonated in the upper atmosphere.
Do not leave untill rescue teams have given the all clear. If the attack occurs due to a nuclear conflict there might be multiple attacks on the same target area or surrounding targets. Military bases, airports, industrial centers, power plants, and ports all could be potential targets as well as the city they surround.

Tip: No matter what, always remember -- dot dot dot, dash dash dash, dot dot dot is Morse code for "S.O.S."

My personal survival plan for where i currently live is to get over the lake where i currently live into farmland and beyond the hills. Its about 2 kilometres away and the lake is 100 - 300 metres wide.
Little to no zombies, little to no looters, little to no chance of a direct attack.
In case of a nuclear war the missile would hit 9 - 20 kilometres away, what would give me enough room for survival and time to find cover or shelter.

If i would live alone, i would have always a packed bag with all kinds of survival stuff ( additionally a packed bag for a scenario where the world is intact, but i have to hide somewhere else, but that is a different topic).
I own a dynamo and solar panel powered radio and a flashlight always accessible. since i dont live in murrica nor soviet russia all of what i have on firearms is an air rifle and an airsoft BB gun ( but i have an axe. fuck yeah, viking style).

for foods, i would recommend canned and sealed food which don't have to be cooed before eating.
It lasts long and the sealing prevents it from getting contaminated with radioactive fallout debris.

also honey is great, since it can last almost forever and makes better taste for everything.

Guard critical electrical equipment against EMP. A nuclear weapon detonated at a very high altitude will generate an electromagnetic pulse so powerful that it can destroy electronic and electrical devices. At the very least, unplug all devices from electrical sockets and antennas.
Placing radios, flashlights in a SEALED metal container (a "Faraday cage") may protect from EMP, providing the items being protected are not in contact with the enclosure. The metal shield must surround the protected item completely - and it helps if it is grounded.

The items to be protected should be insulated from the conductive shell, since the EMP field washing over the shield can still induce voltages in solid state circuit boards.
A metalized "space blanket" (costing about $2.00 USD) wrapped securely around a device wrapped in newspaper or cotton may act as a Faraday shield, helpful if one is far from the blast.

Another method is to wrap a cardboard box in copper or aluminum foil. Place the item in there and plug the device into the ground.

Wat do
  • Seek shelter immediately. Aside from the geopolitical warning signs, your first warnings of an imminent nuclear attack will most likely be an alarm or warning signal; if not, it will be the blast itself. The bright light from a detonation of a nuclear weapon can be seen tens of miles away from ground zero.
If within the vicinity of the blast (or ground zero), your chances of survival are virtually nonexistent unless you are in a shelter that provides a very (VERY) good blast protection. If you are a few miles out, you will have about 10-15 seconds until the heat wave hits you, and maybe 20-30 seconds until the shock wave does.
Under no circumstances should you look directly at the fireball. On a clear day, this can cause temporary blindness at very large distances.[5] However, the actual damage radius is highly variable depending on the size of the bomb, the altitude of the explosion, and even the weather conditions at the time of the blast

If you can't find shelter, seek a depressed area nearby and lay face down, exposing as little skin as possible. If there is no shelter of this kind, dig as fast as possible. Even around 8 kilometers (5 miles) you will suffer third degree thermal-burns; still at 32 kilometers (20 miles) the heat can burn the skin off your body.
The wind itself will peak at around 960 kilometers per hour (600mph) and will level anything or anybody caught in the open.

Failing the above options, get indoors, if, and only if, you can be sure that the building will not suffer significant blast and heat damage. This will, at least, provide some protection against radiation. Whether this will be a viable option depends on the construction of the building and how close you will be to the likely ground zero of a nuclear strike.
Stay well away from any windows, preferably in a room without one; even if the building does not suffer substantial damage, a nuclear explosion will blow out windows at enormous distances.

If residing in Switzerland or Finland, check if your home has an atomic shelter. If not, determine where your village/town/district atomic shelter is and know how to get there. Remember: anywhere in Switzerland, you'll be able to find an atomic shelter.
When the sirens sound in Switzerland, you are advised to inform those who may not be able to hear it (e.g. the deaf) and then listen to the National Radio Services (RSR, DRS and/or RTSI).

Don't be surrounded by anything flammable or combustible. Substances like nylon or any oil based material will ignite from the heat.

Plan on staying in your shelter for a minimum of 200 hours (8-9 days). Under no circumstances leave the shelter in the first forty-eight hours .

Ration your supplies. You will need to ration to survive, obviously; therefore you will eventually expose yourself to the radiation (unless you are in a specific shelter with food and water).

Processed foods are okay to eat, so long as the container has no punctures and is relatively intact.
Animals may be eaten but, they must be skinned carefully with the heart, liver and kidneys discarded. Try not to eat meat that is close to the bone, for bone marrow retains radiation.

Plants in a "hot zone" are edible; those with edible roots or undergrowth (carrots, potatoes...) are highly recommended. Use an edibility test on the plants.

See How to Test if a Plant Is Edible.
Open water may have received fallout particles and is harmful. Water from an underground source, such as a spring or covered well, is your best bet. (Consider making a basic pit-style solar still, as described in How to Make Water in the Desert.) Use water from streams and lakes only as a last resort.
Create a filter by digging a hole about 1ft from the bank and drawing the water which seeps in. It may be cloudy or muddy so allow the sediments to sit, then boil the water to ensure safety from bacteria. If in a building, the water is usually safe.
If there is no water (there most likely won't be), use the water already in the pipes by opening the faucet at the highest point of the house to let in air, then open a faucet at the lowest point of the house to drain the water.

Wear all clothing (hats, gloves, goggles, closed sleeve shirt, etc.), especially when outside to help prevent Beta burns. Decontaminate by shaking your clothes constantly and washing, with water, any exposed skin; settled residue will eventually cause burns.

General Tips:
  • Never lose your cool, especially if you are in charge. This is important in maintaining a high level of morale amongst others, which is essential in such dire situations.

Do not drink, eat, or allow object-to-body contact with any plant, stream water or metallic object found in an unknown area.

Take the time to learn all you can about this emergency. Every minute spent learning "what to do, and what is safe" will save you valuable time when the need for it arises. To depend on hope & luck in a situation like this is foolhardy.

Know if there is a retaliatory attack or a second detonation in your area. If so, you must wait another 200 hours (8-9 days) from the last detonation.

Do not expose yourself. It is uncertain how many roentgens a person can receive without having radiation sickness. Normally, it takes 100-150 roentgens to get a mild sickness which is survivable. Even if you don't die of radiation sickness, you can still get cancer later.

Even after it is safe to leave the shelter, local law and the federal government will be in crisis mode. Incidents of chaos and anarchy may occur, so remain hidden until it is safe or the federal/local enforcement seizes power and seeks stability. Generally speaking, if you see tanks (unless they are hostile tanks), some type of order has been restored.

Also here is a great video about it: http://www.howcast.com/videos/317493-Ho ... ist-Attack.

This isn't so big, i thought nuclear explosions were like, new york to montreal or shit...
But nope, that's just, not far.
I even inserted 99999 as the yard thing, but i'm still safe.

Now i'm happy.

We will surely live in a time of peace without wars, diseases of harsh events.Humanity, despite fighting on some locations and go short on resources, have like a 60-70 years old of peace again I think. Our childrens and grandchildrens, them, will surely know the war for the resources or the war for the water.

Technically, when a nuclear war occur, it's when the allies of the 2 enemy countries each launch their warheads on the ally of the enemy.

But I doubt that presidents and/or dictators will ever have the stones to launch them.Maybe bombs, maybe good old soldier and bayonet war, but nuclear wrjheads, I really doubt it...
But as there isn't much land to win, and the actual western "conflicts" are about politic or rockets, there will not be any invasion...Exept, maybe, fort he Senkaku archipel that are between China and Japan.

But still thanks for that interesting tutorial, Doodle :D

You mean thoses were a group of 6 teens half clothed goes in vacations and fuck, then they are attacked and all dies and only the Italian boy and the blonde girl survive with blood everywhere ? Nah thanks, my dumbs friends made me seeing thoses plastic movies too much times lol.

And, fuck dat, nuclear war won't happens.
