Actually, I remember having this error (steam vac secure connection).
If you get this error, your compuer could be too slow to run hl2dm AND steam at once. You just gotta go offline on steam friends list and if that won't work restart steam and then go offline again.

That's how it always worked for me on my old crappy computer.
