New Server Box is on its way :)

Post by nick_6893 »

Ant and I decided to buy our 3rd server box.

We plan on growing our servers and community into the new year.

The new server that we have bought is 4 times the speed of the old ones.

New Server Specs (Dell Optiplex 780):

Processor: Intel Q9550 Quad Core @ 2.8ghz (12mb L2 cache)
Ram: 4gb DDR3 @ 1333mhz
Harddrive: 320gb

According to CPU benchmarks, this server will clearly outperform the current ones for smoother gameplay:
Old Processor: http://cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Int ... Hz&id=1129
New Processor: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu ... 40+2.83GHz

We will update this as soon as we get the server and we will keep you posted on new game servers.

We would also like to thank everyone who has donated in the past on making this possible.

Nick... CPUBenchmarks gives a CPU points depending what the CPU has to offer to the consumer.
It's not 4x better just because it has 4x the points of the old CPU. Just throwing that out there to let you know...
Anyways it's good to hear that you're investing your hard earned money (partially donations let me guess?) but if you want to have somewhat near professional servers then you'd probably want to invest a bit more into the servers.
I mean come on... DDR2 ram? DDR4 is already out... not saying you should go for DDR4 memory but atleast DDR3.

Here's a comparison of both CPU's:

Also here's a quick comparison of your new processor and my new one. :> (I love my new baby)

I believe its DDR2 at 667mhz which will be plenty for source servers. The server is not like a gaming computer, you know.

Good info. But like Nick said, Source servers are more dependent on CPU power over RAM speed/usage. Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 processors are still offered in many dedicated server packages.

Either way, this will be plenty for us to run new game servers, and to split up the game servers we have already (i.e. Minecraft will basically have its own box because it is such a resource hog :))

The server is in! Here are some pictures and I have looked inside and it looks like its DDR3 with 1333mhz (2x2gb - good for upgrading to 8gb if needed). The ebay item only said it had 4gb of ram but didn't say speed. So, I guess it's faster than expected. Ant and I will install centOS tonight and move some servers over. We will determine what new games we will run after the Christmas sale in steam.
